The ransomware called Roshalock 2.00 is unusual because it archives a victim’s personal files and encrypts the RAR unlock key to prevent ransom-free recovery.
Some ransom Trojans encode their preys’ valuable data and then perform the extortion part of the attack proper. Others lock files down by moving them to a password-protected archive. The new Roshalock 2.00 infection does both. At the first stage of the compromise, it identifies all potentially important data entries on a computer and places them into a WinRar archive called All_Your_Documents.rar. Due to the specificity of this auxiliary program’s nature, the byproduct of this routine is encryption of the information with symmetric AES-256 algorithm. What is more, the key generated along the way is then enciphered with RSA-2048, a stronger asymmetric cryptosystem. The ultimate upshot of such a multi-layered processing is that the user is no longer able to access the files. Roshalock 2.00 ransomware establishes contact with infected users via ransom notes called “All Your Files in Archive!.txt”. These documents can be found in folders with encrypted data and on the desktop. They contain the warning message “To get back your files read this carefully!” in five languages, plus data recovery steps in English. The explanation of the attack goes, “Your documents on all drives (photos, videos, docs, etc.) have been moved to password-protected WinRAR archives. This archives [sic] is located in the root of each disk, in folder “All_Your_Documents” and file name is “All_Your_Documents.rar.” At the end of the day, to get their password the victim is supposed to visit a specified page using Tor Browser. The page is actually a payment console that states in the clear how big the ransom is and how to submit it.
The size of the ransom fluctuates depending on the time that passed since the user first visited the payment page. The starting price is 0.35 BTC. In three days, it will start increasing by 0.05 BTC every 24 hours until it hits a maximum of 1.85 BTC. The Tor gateway also provides the criminals’ Bitcoin wallet address to deposit the payment. The use of The Onion Router along with the Bitcoin cryptocurrency is a clever move on the attackers’ end, because it allows anonymizing the interaction and thus helps them avoid attribution of the extortion campaign. Yet another smart move is that Roshalock 2.00 skips data with the following extensions: .exe, .js, .lnk, .wsf, and .tmp. The infection needs these types of files to deploy the contamination chain. Furthermore, it ignores whole directories, such as Program Files, AppData, Windows, Local Settings, Microsoft and many more – the reason being that the information inside these paths may be critical for the operating system to run properly.
